If you have time, visit Monastiraki, the second liveliest district of the capital.

Later head to the Museum of Cycladic Art which focuses on two types of art in particular: works from the classical period and those from the Bronze Age (third millennium). After your visit, stop at one of the many taverns of Athens. Finish the day with a short walk to the top of Mount Lycabettus, 277 meters
high, from where you will have a splendid view of the capital.

Your third day begins with a half-day tour of the city during which you will discover some important sights of Athens such as the Panathenaic Stadium, the Academy of Athens, the temple of Olympian Zeus and of course the Acropolis as well as its museum, inaugurated in 2009. These important sites make for an informative and interesting tour which will immerse you in the heart of ancient Greece.

Rest of the day free.

You can choose between visiting a museum such as the Benaki Museum with its many collections (Islamic art, Greek history, archives and architecture) or discovering other aspects of local life such as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located next to Syntagma Square, where there is a changing of the guards every hour. Conclude your day by strolling through the closed market where the smells, flavors and sounds will entice you.

Discovering Athens and Greece is more than just sightseeing; tasting Greek cuisine is an integral part of enjoying a fresh and colorful Mediterranean diet. Typical dishes include Horitaki (Greek salad), Spanakopita (puff pastry filled with Feta and spinach) and dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves). To try the many local flavors, head to Ama Lachei Stis Nefelis for Kritharioti (a local version of risotto) or Apaki (a pork-based meal). Don’t forget to wash it all down with Raki, a typical alcoholic beverage, the best of which you can find at the Aster!

The cuisine here is similar to that of the mainland. Enjoy the Kopanisti, known as the Greek Roquefort, as well as the Kremidopita, a typical regional onion pie. Allow yourself to be seduced by Mostra (barley rusk with a tablespoon of Kopanisti cheese topped with a ripe diced tomato) and sausages with black-eyed peas. The Kikis Tavern and the Fokos Tavern are the best bets for these typical dishes. The Hippie Fish is also very popular especially for its fresh products.

You will be met by a surprise on your arrival to Naxos: the Portara, a huge, vertical structure that is the most famous monument on the island. Walk through it and along a long cobblestone path to reach the town of Naxos, a visual treat especially when the sun goes down.

The ancient Venetian buildings give the old town an unusual atmosphere. Here you can discover the Venetian castle built in 1207, as well as the district of Kastro, one of the friendliest sites to visit. Next, put on your bathing suit and head to one of the beaches in the area such as Mikri Vigla, also ideal for kite surfing. In the evening discover the district of Burgos with its charming, narrow streets. Don’t hesitate to stop in the small local harbours to taste some good Greek beers such as Eza, Septem and Zeos.

If you have time, continue on your way to Halki, the old local capital, a friendly little village with its own distillery that now serves as a museum.

In terms of cuisine, Oasis is probably the restaurant in Naxos that should not be missed. This family establishment offers guests a menu that varies from day to day. We recommend the Pasticcio, the stuffed peppers and the pork stew. For a good moussaka try the Meltemi, located a stone’s throw from the Oasis.
